Historic Milestone: Alberta Independence Referendum Petition Application Approved by Elections Alberta
Calgary, Alberta – December 22, 2025 – The Alberta Prosperity Project (APP) is thrilled to announce a groundbreaking victory for Alberta’s sovereignty movement. Elections Alberta has officially approved our Citizen Initiative Petition application (2025-CIP-10) for A Referendum Relating to Alberta Independence, confirming that it fully meets all requirements under the Citizen Initiative Act.
In a letter dated December 22, 2025, Chief Electoral Officer Gordon McClure stated that the mandatory 7-day public notice period begins December 23, 2025, and runs through December 29, 2025. During this time, Elections Alberta will publish the official Notice of Initiative Petition approval, the full application, and the constitutional question on their website.
As December 29 falls on a closed office day under the Interpretation Act, section 22, the petition will be formally issued on the next business day: Friday, January 2, 2026.
This approval opens the door for Albertans to collect signatures, paving the way for the province’s first-ever binding referendum on independence.

Next Steps:
- December 23–29, 2025: Public notice period on the Elections Alberta website.
- January 2, 2026: Petition officially issued – signature collection begins province-wide.
- 120-day collection period: Collect approximately 177,000 valid signatures (10% of eligible voters from the last provincial election).
If successful, a binding referendum will be called, empowering Albertans to decide our future directly.
