Alberta Prosperity Project: Smith-Carney Pipeline MOU Proves Confederation Is Irreparably Broken – Independence Is Now the Only Path Forward
The Alberta Prosperity Project (APP) declares that yesterday’s Memorandum of Understanding between Premier Danielle Smith and Prime Minister Mark Carney is the final proof Albertans needed: no premier, no matter the party, can ever secure real control over our resources while we remain inside Canada. This agreement is accelerating the independence movement like never before.
Mitch Sylvestre, Chief Executive Officer of the Alberta Prosperity Project, stated: “This MOU is a useless piece of paper with no binding commitments, no guaranteed pipeline, and no surrender of federal authority over Alberta’s energy sector. Albertans can now see in high definition that even a UCP premier must beg Ottawa for permission to develop our own resources. This is the ultimate evidence that Confederation is rigged against us – and it is handing our movement the momentum we have been building for years.”
Jeff Rath, legal counsel to the Alberta Prosperity Project, added: “By accepting Mark Carney’s net-zero shackles in exchange for empty pipeline talk, Danielle Smith has just given every Albertan a front-row seat to the complete failure of Confederation. This is the moment the independence movement goes from conversation to unstoppable demand.”
Even Conservative Party of Canada Leader Pierre Poilievre has highlighted the MOU’s emptiness, calling it “a worthless piece of paper” and stating: “Today’s deal allows a proposal for a pipeline to go to an office in seven months, which will then be studied for two years, after which the prime minister will give a pipeline veto to the B.C. NDP premier, who’s already said he’s against it.” His call to “get out of the way” of Alberta’s energy sector echoes the growing frustration that only full sovereignty can resolve.
Albertans are finished watching billions flow east while our wealth is sterilised by federal policy. Yesterday’s deal changes nothing fundamental – it simply confirms that genuine prosperity is impossible until Alberta is sovereign.
Sylvestre concluded: “This MOU is the spark that has lit the fire. Pledges are pouring in, membership is surging, and the path to a sovereignty referendum has never been clearer. Alberta’s future is independence – and yesterday just made that future inevitable.”
