On December 22, 2025, Global News published an article titled “Proposed Alberta separation referendum question approved”. The story reported on Elections Alberta’s approval of the referendum question submitted by the Alberta Prosperity Project—a major step forward in giving Albertans a direct voice on their future.
Elections Alberta has approved the proposed referendum question, "Do you agree that the province of Alberta should cease to be a part of Canada to become an independent state?"https://t.co/iDBBuKA4g5
— Global Calgary (@GlobalCalgary) December 22, 2025
The approved question is clear and straightforward: “Do you agree that the province of Alberta should cease to be a part of Canada to become an independent state?”
This milestone brings us closer to a democratic process that prioritises Faith, Family, and Freedom for all Albertans. Yet, while we welcome coverage of this achievement, we were troubled by the prominent photo chosen to accompany the article: an image from a May 3, 2025, rally at the Alberta Legislature where participants expressed support for Alberta becoming the 51st state of the United States (credit: Jason Franson/The Canadian Press).
For the record:
- This rally was not an APP event.
- It was not organised by the APP.
- None of our Ambassadors or representatives spoke at it.
Our referendum question and signature drive focus exclusively on Alberta achieving full sovereignty as an independent nation. There is no mention of joining the United States. As we have stated repeatedly, neither the Alberta Prosperity Project nor the United States is engaged in any discussions about annexation.
Linking our independence movement to U.S. annexation is a baseless conspiracy theory pushed by detractors who wish to discredit us. By featuring this unrelated rally photo, Global News unfortunately helps spread that misinformation, misleading readers about the true nature of our initiative.
We immediately contacted reporter Jack Farrell to raise our concerns and request a correction. Jack responded promptly and transparently, noting that the photo choice was made by Global News editors (not him) and acknowledging it was misleading. He pointed out that other outlets, such as The Globe and Mail and CBC, used more neutral imagery.

Following that exchange, we sent a formal request directly to Global News Edmonton asking them to replace the photo and add a clarification. As of December 23, 2025, Global News has not yet replied to our request. We will update this article if and when they respond or make any changes.

This episode illustrates the challenges we face in getting fair coverage. As our movement gains momentum, we can expect more misinformation and disinformation, conspiracies, and outright lies—often orchestrated by powerful people in Ottawa and beyond who do not want their $700 billion golden goose to leave Canada.
To counter these tactics, educate Albertans, and keep pushing for the referendum, we need your help more than ever. Please consider donating today at https://nb.albertaprosperity.com/donate. Every contribution brings us closer to a prosperous, independent Alberta.

Update: Global News Changes Misleading Photo in Alberta Independence Referendum Article
December 23, 2025 (Updated from original publication on December 23, 2025)
Great news, fellow Albertans! Following our outreach and formal request for correction, Global News has quietly replaced the misleading photo in their December 22, 2025 article “Proposed Alberta separation referendum question approved”.

The original image—from a May 3, 2025 rally supporting the unrelated idea of Alberta as the 51st U.S. state—has been swapped for a more neutral one showing supporters of Alberta’s separation holding a rally on October 25, 2025. They also added an Editor’s Note: “Global News has replaced the main image of this article, as it represented an event not affiliated with the Alberta Prosperity Project.”
This is a positive step toward accurate reporting, and we appreciate that our concerns were heard. It demonstrates the power of speaking up when media coverage risks distorting our message of true independence.
To recap the issue: The original photo depicted an event that was not organised by the APP, was not an APP event, and featured none of our Ambassadors speaking. Our approved referendum question focuses solely on Alberta becoming an independent sovereign nation—no mention of joining the U.S.
As always, our goal is greater sovereignty for Alberta, grounded in Faith, Family, and Freedom.
However, this incident is just one example of the challenges ahead. As our movement grows, we can expect more misinformation and disinformation, conspiracies, and outright lies—orchestrated by powerful people in Ottawa and beyond who do not want their $700 billion golden goose to leave Canada.
Be vigilant. The fight for Alberta’s prosperity is far from over, and attempts to misrepresent or undermine us will continue.
We need your help to counter this. Stay informed, share the facts with your networks, and support our efforts to educate Albertans and advance the referendum.
