Alberta, the conspiracy mill is churning again. This time, online sleuths claim to have “irrefutable evidence” that Alberta Prosperity Project co-founder and lawyer Jeff Rath is a covert US military operative. The proof? A lapel pin spotted in a rally video. According to the circulating Facebook post, the pin is from the US Army 101st Airborne Division—proof positive that Jeff is secretly working to hand Alberta over to the United States.
We won’t dignify the fantasy with too much detail, but the accusation is clear: Jeff is allegedly some kind of deep-cover agent ready to deliver our province into American hands.
The reality is far simpler and far more honourable.
Jeff served proudly in the Canadian Armed Forces, enlisting in 1982. As a young Corporal, he passed the rigorous Airborne pre-parachute fitness test and trained soldiers in marksmanship. In 1983, he was attached to the US 101st Airborne Division as a Combat Engineer, serving alongside American troops.
The lapel pin that sparked this entire theory was a gift from a close friend who served in the 101st Airborne. That friend is now deceased. Jeff wears the pin to honour his service and the sacrifice of all those who were willing to lay down their lives for freedom.
There is nothing secretive or sinister about it—it is a gesture of respect from one veteran to another.

Jeff himself recently shared a throwback photo from that era:

BLAST FROM THE PAST

20 years old, had recently passed the Airborne pre-para fitness test and was on a course learning how to teach my fellow soldiers how to kill Soviets more effectively with a range of small arms. pic.twitter.com/p0mlGuxKnB
And on why he joined the military:
I joined the military in 1982 to fight communism.

I am still fighting communism. #AlbertaIndependence
Jeff has also made it clear he is not afraid to put his life on the line today, just as he was prepared to do as a young soldier—for a free and independent Alberta.
I’m not a politician. I’m just a guy working to free Alberta from a dysfunctional relationship with Ottawa.

I will never run for public office. Never have – never will.
That said – when we finish getting the architecture in place for a 500 Billion US LOC to support Alberta… pic.twitter.com/5gs9LA9ZBM
These baseless conspiracies are designed to distract and divide. They discredit a grassroots movement built on facts, law, and a genuine desire for Alberta to control its own destiny.
