A Path to Sovereignty: An Aspirational Timeline for the Republic of Alberta

by Alberta Prosperity Project

As members of the Alberta Prosperity Project (APP), we are committed to advancing Alberta’s independence movement, guided by our core values of Faith, Family, and Freedom. Our vision is a prosperous, self-determining Alberta free from federal overreach, where low taxes, property rights, and resource ownership empower every Albertan. While APP does not directly organise petitions, we fully support grassroots efforts that align with our goals, such as the upcoming citizen initiative led by Mitch Sylvestre. This petition, set to launch on stayfreealberta.com on January 2, 2026, will run for 120 days and aims to gather the signatures needed to trigger a referendum on Alberta’s sovereignty. We encourage all Albertans to visit stayfreealberta.com starting January 2 to learn more and participate—this is your chance to shape our future.

This aspirational timeline outlines a grounded yet ambitious path to independence, drawing on Alberta’s existing democratic institutions, the Citizen Initiative Act, and insights from constitutional expert Keith Wilson, K.C. (@ikwilson). It assumes a successful signature drive and a clear “YES” vote in the referendum, paving the way for orderly negotiations and international recognition. Remember, this process complies with Alberta’s election laws: the petition is a citizen-led effort by Mitch Sylvestre, not affiliated with any political party or organisation like APP, and focuses solely on gathering voluntary signatures from eligible voters.

January 2, 2026 — Signature Collection Begins <—We are here

The journey starts with Albertans uniting behind the citizen-initiated referendum petition. Led by Mitch Sylvestre, this drive will collect signatures across the province to surpass the required thresholds under the Citizen Initiative Act (20% of eligible voters province-wide and in at least two-thirds of electoral divisions for a constitutional question). Head to stayfreealberta.com on launch day to sign up and join the momentum. With APP’s growing support and grassroots energy, we can exceed expectations quickly. Come on, let’s go—your signature could be the spark!

April–June 2026 — Petition Submitted and Validated

Once signatures are gathered, they will be submitted to Elections Alberta for validation. This step ensures the process remains transparent and democratic, adhering strictly to provincial rules. A successful validation officially triggers the referendum, giving Albertans a direct voice on our future.

October 2026 — Successful Referendum

Albertans head to the polls to answer: “Do you agree that the province of Alberta should cease to be a part of Canada and become an independent state?” A resounding YES vote provides the democratic mandate essential for sovereignty. This pivotal moment reflects the will of the people, building on our shared values and the frustrations with federal policies that drain our resources.

October–November 2026 — United States Recognises Alberta as an Independent State

Post-referendum, the United States, under President Trump, is expected to extend rapid diplomatic recognition. Emphasising shared values like energy security and North American stability, this move aligns with U.S. interests. As Keith Wilson has noted, this recognition carries significant weight and accelerates the process, providing immediate leverage in negotiations.

November–December 2026 — Wave of International Recognition and Declaration of Sovereignty

Following U.S. leadership, allies such as the United Kingdom and Australia are likely to recognise Alberta. The Alberta Legislature will pass a formal Declaration of Sovereignty, asserting our right to self-determination while committing to respectful talks with Canada. Our existing government and institutions will continue seamlessly, ensuring stability during this transition.

Early 2027 (Q1) — Negotiations with Canada Begin; Economic Transitions Start

Formal discussions on assets, debt, borders, pensions, and resources commence. Alberta will retain full control of its resource revenues, phase out federal taxes and transfers, and secure trade agreements—particularly with the U.S.—to maintain uninterrupted energy flows. This economic shift will protect jobs and boost prosperity from day one.

Spring 2027 (March 1–May 31 Window) — Founding National Election of the Republic of Alberta

Alberta’s scheduled general election transforms into the first national election of the independent Republic. Voters will grant a fresh mandate to leaders tasked with finalising negotiations and refining our constitution. As Keith Wilson has repeatedly explained, Alberta already possesses all the institutions of a sovereign state—continuity ensures stability and democratic legitimacy from day one.

Mid-2027 (Summer) — Constitution Drafted and Treaties Honoured

A constituent assembly will draft the Constitution of the Republic of Alberta, enshrining key principles like property rights, resource ownership, low taxes, and respect for First Nations treaties. These treaties, which as Keith Wilson clarifies, transfer with the land and make First Nations Albertans equal citizens in the new republic, will be fully honoured. Currency planning will advance, starting with the Canadian dollar and potentially evolving to an Alberta dollar or peg.

Late 2027 — Full Independence Achieved; Republic of Alberta Officially Established

Negotiations conclude under international observation, with Canada recognising independence due to diplomatic and economic realities. The Republic will join global organisations, finalise defence arrangements (such as NORAD continuity), and launch citizenship and passport systems. This marks the official birth of our sovereign nation.

2028 Onward — Prosperity Phase

The Republic of Alberta thrives without equalisation payments, boasting booming energy exports, low taxes that attract investment and immigration, and strong U.S. partnerships. Independence Day celebrations—perhaps on July 1 as a symbolic nod to renewal—will herald an era of unmatched prosperity.

This timeline is ambitious but rooted in Alberta’s laws, institutions, and momentum. The referendum YES vote is the cornerstone—everything flows from Albertans’ clear will. To make this vision a reality, the upcoming signature drive needs your support. Gathering signatures province-wide requires resources for outreach, materials, and coordination. Donations are essential to fuel this grassroots campaign and ensure we reach every corner of Alberta.
