Respected financial analyst and CFA Charterholder Martin Pelletier, Senior Portfolio Manager at TriVest Wealth Counsel and a columnist for the Financial Post, recently posted a thoughtful thread examining the economic implications of Alberta separation. While noting the significant challenges it would pose to the rest of Canada, Pelletier emphasises the enormous advantages for Alberta, particularly at the household level.

“My personal view may mean nothing when Albertans see the huge personal $ benefits of departing and vote yes. For example, a household of two adults ≈ $5,800; a family of four ≈ $11,600 per year. A 5–10% APP uplift would be $456–$912 (avg) and $780–$1,560 per year increase. These are big numbers.”

These figures highlight the direct financial relief Albertans could experience by retaining revenues currently sent to Ottawa—estimated at billions annually—combined with potential enhancements from an Alberta Pension Plan (APP). As Pelletier outlines in his broader thread, keeping federal taxes collected in Alberta (around $70 billion yearly) would create massive surpluses, enable tax cuts, and fund stronger social programs without added debt.
