Ottawa’s Clown Show Isn’t Comedy—It’s a Crisis

A Turkish proverb, an embarrassing parade of policy failures, and why Albertans are turning to sovereignty for sanity and strength.

On Clowns and Governance.

The Turks possess a long and rich history. We won’t study their Ottoman Empire, but we can still learn from one of their proverbs. And given the House of Windsor’s recent visit to Ottawa, this lesson seems particularly appropriate…

When a clown moves into the palace, he doesn’t become a king. The palace becomes a circus.

Hundreds of millions of onlookers around the world observing this country for the past decade know that this is precisely the lesson we’ve been living with. Living in. We’re onto “different clown, same circus” territory, but it remains a carnival of deceit nonetheless. A PM that commits to shrinking spending in the AM and produces a detail-less budget with an 8% increase in the afternoon, cowardly covert tariff cancellations while running on a macho “Elbows up” slogan, ‘yes’ to pipelines one day and ‘no’ the next — this smells suspiciously like popcorn and elephant dung.

Albertans know a big-top tent when we see one. Our fearless leader does too. She doesn’t hesitate to call out the contradictions and hypocrisy rolling west through the prairies from Parliament Hill. She’s a big reason Albertans are aware of the insanity that has infected Ottawa. Without her protective measures and outspoken reflections, many would be oblivious of the force attempting to choreograph financial suicide via the planet’s cleanest and most ethical energy production. (Also a moral failure in the eyes of many.) Thankfully, our provincial ‘palace’ is nearly clown free — the radical leader of the NDP being the notable exception. Most of us recognize the tell-tale make-up of a jester attempting to disguise its face.

Shockingly, many do not recognize this.

But they can. And they will. This is just one feature of a sovereign Alberta. When the reality of a lower cost for everything, business and investment rushes in, a simplified political situation and the Federal boot comes off of our neck, those confused and oblivious Albertans will see why this movement has refused to go away. When life improves dramatically, it’s hard to find a complainer.

The faith of such a reality is gaining steam. Polls over past months reveal a trend of awakening in our province. Some results have climbed from the low 20’s to the high 40’s in favor of independence. Albertans are increasingly curious about the breath of fresh air that would result from the east’s Circus Maximus becoming Circus Minimus. Or, more aptly, Circus Irrelevantus.

The curious, the fed-up, the clear-headed and the visionary understand the endless benefits of shedding this corrupt federal layer of bloated, cannibalistic bureaucracy. As the economy heads for another Liberal facilitated recession, finances are the detail most top-of-mind. But the advantages of a sovereign Alberta would reach beyond a return to fiscal sanity, an economic boom and surpluses in our personal budgets. We are birthing a situation that likely does not — and has never — existed on the planet. The excitement and fortitude is catching on. With numbers growing so rapidly, Alberta will never be the same; regardless of the outcome of an impending referendum.

What’s happening here is historical.

We began with a lesson from years gone by, so it’s fitting to wrap up with a few more. There’s sage and historical precedent supporting the growing movement of faith, family and freedom in the province. According to many prominent figures from the past, upon independence, Albertans can look forward to a rejuvenation of the human spirit. Here are just a few of those figures and the lessons echoing behind them:

The more the state ‘plans,’ the more difficult planning becomes for the individual.
– Economist, Friedrich Hayek

When the government is too intrusive, people lose their spirit.
– Author Lao Tzu, from the Tao Te Ching

That government is best which governs least, because its people discipline themselves.”
— Politician, Thomas Jefferson

Government is not the solution to our problem; government is the problem.
— President, Ronald Reagan

The more laws and restrictions there are, the poorer people become.
— Author Lao Tzu, from the Tao Te Ching

Albertans innately understand the repression of heavy — and heavy-handed — government. Even before the stunningly destructive era of Trudea 2.0, there was a small but healthy contingency of freedom-appreciating people working to be free of Ottawa’s claws.

And millions more now understand why.

Like a January snowball, the movement’s momentum grows with each misstep of the new PM’s big red shoes. This also means Albertans get closer to experiencing circuses exclusively of our own choice; Cirque Du Soleil comes to mind. And bonus: we’ll even be able to afford the tickets.
