Alberta’s Five Freedoms to a Prosperous Future: F.A.C.E.E

by Alberta Prosperity Project

Hello fellow Albertans,

As we navigate the complexities of our relationship within Canada, it’s crucial to explore paths that maximize our province’s potential for prosperity and freedom. The Alberta Prosperity Project is dedicated to fostering informed discussions about Alberta’s future, and today, we want to introduce a concept we call Alberta’s Five Freedoms, or F.A.C.E.E.

What does F.A.C.E.E. stand for, and how could embracing these freedoms benefit every Albertan? Let’s break it down:

F – Freedom from Federal Income Tax:

Albertans currently face a dual tax burden, paying both provincial and federal income taxes. However, data reveals that our province contributes disproportionately to federal finances. Between 2007 and 2018, Albertans and Alberta-based businesses contributed a net $252.5 billion to federal coffers—an average of $21 billion annually1. This includes direct taxes from individuals and corporations, as well as indirect contributions through federal excise taxes, GST, and other levies1. Alberta’s oil and gas sector alone contributed at least $50 billion during this period, with annual direct payments averaging $4.1 billion1. By retaining these funds, Albertans could reinvest billions into local priorities—healthcare, infrastructure, and tax relief—instead of subsidizing federal programs that often fail to align with provincial needs.

A – Alberta Constitution:

A unique Alberta Constitution would allow us to enshrine the values that matter most to us. Imagine a constitution that guarantees freedom of speech, protects religious freedom, recognizes the importance of responsible gun ownership, promotes the English language, and ensures our education system reflects Alberta’s values. This freedom allows Albertans to shape their society according to their beliefs.

C – Carbon Tax

Eliminating carbon taxes would provide immediate financial relief to Albertans and industries. A 2019 provincial assessment found Alberta’s carbon tax reduced annual GDP growth by 0.045% (equivalent to $2–$2.6 billion in lost economic output) and lowered employment by 4,000–8,200 jobs annually2. The Fraser Institute projects that escalating federal carbon pricing could shrink Canada’s GDP by 1.8% and eliminate 185,000 jobs nationwide, disproportionately impacting energy-intensive provinces like Alberta4. With gasoline taxes alone set to rise to 24.2¢/L by 20263, removing these levies would lower fuel and heating costs while allowing Alberta’s energy sector to reinvest savings into innovation and job creation.

E – Excise Tax:

Envision a future where you’re not paying federal excise taxes on goods. This could have a significant impact on cross-border shopping and the cost of everyday items, potentially leading to savings for consumers and increased competitiveness for Alberta businesses. Imagine gasoline at significantly lower prices, similar to prices in the U.S.

E – Equalization Payments:

Alberta contributes significantly to the federal equalization program. Retaining the nearly $40 billion that leaves our province annually could allow us to invest in vital infrastructure, healthcare, education, and other essential services right here at home. This would empower Alberta to address its unique needs and priorities more effectively.

Why Consider These Freedoms?

These Five Freedoms represent a vision for a more prosperous and self-determined Alberta. They offer the potential for greater economic control, the ability to shape our society based on our values, and the opportunity to invest in our future.

The Alberta Prosperity Project believes that Albertans deserve to have an informed discussion about all options for our province’s future. Exploring these freedoms is not about separation; it’s about exploring how we can create the best possible future for ourselves and generations to come.

We encourage you to research these concepts further, discuss them with your friends and neighbors, and join the conversation about Alberta’s future.

Let’s work together to build a brighter tomorrow for Alberta!
