Our Goal – Position Alberta with the leverage needed to negotiate with Canada from a position of strength.
This is a road map that highlights the parallel steps Alberta needs to take to achieve either of two goals, 1) enhanced sovereignty within Canada or 2) complete independence without Canada.
Both pathways focus on establishing strength and self-reliance to secure Alberta’s leverage in negotiating with the federal government, ultimately allowing Albertans to decide the province’s future.
This road map is designed to empower Albertans to shape their future based on their own terms.
Step 1
Establish Alberta’s Own Pension Plan: Withdraw from the Canada Pension Plan (CPP) to create a sustainable, Alberta-focused alternative.
- Conduct studies to demonstrate the viability and benefits of an Alberta Pension Plan
- Secure legal and operational frameworks for Alberta to manage and fund pensions independently
- Build public support by ensuring the plan provides equal or better benefits than the CPP.
Step 2
Establish Financial Autonomy: Build a robust, self-sufficient economy, reducing reliance on federal transfers and subsidies.
- Create Alberta’s own tax collection agency to manage provincial revenue independently.
- Expand investment in Alberta’s industries (e.g., energy, agriculture, tech) to reduce dependency on national policies and markets.
- Enhance trade relationships internationally and with other provinces to diversify Alberta’s economic partners.
Step 3
Alberta Provincial Police Force: Replace the RCMP with an Alberta-controlled police force to reinforce Alberta’s legal autonomy.
- Develop an Alberta Police Service with jurisdiction over provincial matters
- Establish infrastructure, training, and funding to ensure effective law enforcement tailored to Alberta’s needs
- Phase in the provincial force to build trust and effectiveness across Alberta communities
Step 4
Control Over Natural Resources: Gain full authority over Alberta’s resources, maximizing their benefits for Albertans.
- Implement provincial policies to control resource management and exports without federal interference.
- Strengthen Alberta’s energy independence by building pipelines and refining capabilities within the province.
- Negotiate provincial control over royalties and taxation of natural resources.
Step 5
Immigration Control: Assert provincial authority over immigration to ensure policies align with Alberta’s economic and cultural needs.
- Negotiate with the federal government to transfer certain immigration powers to the province.
- Develop Alberta-specific immigration policies that address labor market demands and cultural integration
- Establish a provincial immigration office to manage and implement these policies effectively.
End result
By achieving these steps, Alberta would establish a strong, self-sufficient position, enabling negotiations with the federal government from a position of strength. The province would hold the power to decide, with confidence, whether to pursue sovereignty within Canada or to pursue complete independence without Canada (via a referendum under the Clarity Act).
