In the wake of Premier Danielle Smith’s September 11 meeting with Prime Minister Mark Carney, Albertans find themselves at a pivotal moment. Smith’s post shared on X paints a picture of optimism: an “exceptionally productive” discussion that hints at potential breakthroughs for Alberta’s economy. She speaks of concerns over the coming weeks being addressed, leading to an agreement that could “profoundly benefit” both Alberta and Canada.

Yet, beneath this veneer of progress lies a deeper question…

What is our soul worth? Are we willing to trade our hard-won freedoms for the promise of federal funding, fast-tracked pipelines, or short-term economic relief?

As members of the Alberta Prosperity Project, we must pause and reflect.

Alberta has long been the engine of Canada’s prosperity, yet we’ve endured repeated betrayals, and rugs pulled from under our feet, as Smith herself acknowledges. The federal government has a history of overreach, from carbon taxes that strangle our industries to policies that erode our autonomy. Now, with whispers of concessions on the horizon, the temptation is real: settle for scraps from Ottawa’s table rather than forging our own path to independence.

But let’s be clear, true prosperity isn’t measured in federal handouts or approved projects. It’s rooted in something far more enduring: our values of Faith, Family, and Freedom. These aren’t just slogans; they’re the bedrock of what makes Alberta strong. Faith represents our personal resolve and hope, family reminds us of the legacy we’re building for generations to come, and freedom empowers us to chart our own destiny without the chains of distant bureaucrats.

Consider the ancient wisdom of the Two Wolves story

A tale passed down through generations that resonates deeply in times like these. An elder tells his grandson of a battle raging within every person: one wolf embodies darkness, fueled by fear, resentment, greed, and submission, while the other represents light, driven by joy, truth, compassion, and liberty. The grandson asks which wolf wins, and the elder replies, “The one you feed.”

Today, Albertans face a parallel choice. Do we feed the wolf of complacency, accepting temporary gains that tie us tighter to a flawed system? Or do we nourish the wolf of resolve, pursuing independence to secure real freedom from government overreach? Romans 12:21 “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good,” reminding us that even in this struggle, we can choose to rise above by feeding the force for good.

This isn’t just philosophical musing; it’s practical. Albertans have the power to take control, to create barriers against overreaching policies that dictate our energy sector, our taxes, and even our speech. Independence isn’t about isolation; it’s about sovereignty, where we decide our future without begging for approval from a federal apparatus that views us as a revenue source rather than partners.

Of course, we must address the practicalities, including taxes, a topic that stirs debate even among the pragmatic. The idea of paying taxes to a higher authority is part of our reality, but it shouldn’t mean blind submission. When a system oversteps or fails to serve its people, as some argue Ottawa has, the call for change becomes urgent.

For secular Albertans, the argument is straightforward: independence means keeping more of your hard-earned money in your pocket, free from endless federal demands. It’s about the bottom line on your paycheck.

Is the temperature in Alberta cooling, as some might hope after this meeting? Or is it heating up with a renewed call for independence? We can’t afford to lose hope and entrust our future to a fractured federation that ensures we’ll never achieve true prosperity. Selling our soul for fleeting gains would be a tragic mistake, one that trades our children’s inheritance for the illusion of stability.

Fellow Albertans, what is your future worth? What is your family’s security worth? What is your personal resolve worth?

The Alberta Prosperity Project stands ready to lead the charge toward independence, where Faith, Family, and Freedom aren’t negotiable, they’re our compass. Let’s speak defiantly against forces that seek to silence us and walk fearlessly in the conviction of our voice. The time to act is now, before another rug is pulled. Join us in building an Alberta that thrives on its own terms.
