2025 Year In Review: A Landmark Year for the Alberta Prosperity Project and Alberta’s Independence Movement

As we close the chapter on 2025, the Alberta Prosperity Project (APP) looks back with immense pride and optimism. This year marked extraordinary progress in our pursuit of Alberta sovereignty, guided by our core values of Faith, Family, Freedom. From legislative victories to historic approvals—and a massive rally that drew an estimated 10,000 to 20,000 Albertans—we have mobilised hundreds of thousands of supporters, educated communities across the province, and achieved milestones that bring us closer than ever to a binding referendum. Come On Let’s Go!—the momentum is unstoppable as we head into 2026.

Rising Frustration with Federal Overreach

The year opened against the backdrop of the federal election on April 28, 2025, which saw the Liberals, now led by Prime Minister Mark Carney, secure another term. For many Albertans, this result deepened concerns over Ottawa’s policies that continue to hinder our energy sector, impose restrictive regulations, and redirect our hard-earned wealth through unequal fiscal arrangements.

Polls throughout 2025 reflected growing separatist sentiment, with support hovering around 20-30% province-wide, and even higher in certain demographics. APP’s ongoing educational efforts highlighted the practical benefits of independence: retaining billions in resource revenues, investing in stronger healthcare and infrastructure, and protecting family prosperity from federal intrusion.

Legislative Wins and Direct Democracy Advances

2025 was a breakthrough year legislatively. Premier Danielle Smith’s government introduced and passed key reforms to the Citizen Initiative Act, including Bill 14 (the Justice Statutes Amendment Act, 2025), which received Royal Assent on December 11. These changes removed barriers to citizen-led initiatives, directly benefiting APP’s referendum push.

After navigating challenges and refining our question to align precisely with the federal Clarity Act, APP resubmitted our proposed referendum wording: “Do you agree that the Province of Alberta should cease to be part of Canada to become an independent state?”

The pinnacle achievement came on December 22, 2025, when Elections Alberta approved our Citizen Initiative Petition (2025-CIP-10). Following the public notice period (December 23–29), the petition will be officially issued on January 2, 2026, kicking off a 120-day signature collection drive. We need approximately 177,000 valid signatures to trigger a binding referendum—empowering every eligible Albertan to vote on our independence. With over 240,000 pledges already registered by year’s end, we are poised for success.

Educating and Mobilising Albertans

APP hosted hundreds of “Let’s Talk” town halls, rallies, and informational sessions across the province—from Pincher Creek to Bonnyville, Calgary to rural communities. These events, combined with the historic “I Am Alberta: Rise Up Alberta Rally” on October 25 that brought together an estimated 10,000 to 20,000 proud Albertans at the Legislature Grounds, reached hundreds of thousands through in-person attendance, livestreams, and outreach.

We continued releasing resources, including updates to our fiscal blueprint The Value of Freedom, outlining the immense prosperity an independent Alberta could achieve. Diplomatic outreach, including strategic engagements in Washington, D.C., built international awareness and alliances for a potential sovereign future.

Our pledge drive surged, surpassing 240,000 registrations of Albertans intent on supporting the petition—demonstrating strong grassroots demand.

Looking Ahead to 2026

As 2025 ends on December 31, we stand on the threshold of history. Signature collection begins in mere days, and with it, the real opportunity for Albertans to reclaim control over our resources, economy, and destiny.

This progress belongs to every supporter who attended events, pledged their support, donated, volunteered, or simply believed in a better Alberta. Together, we’re proving that direct democracy works—and that Faith, Family, Freedom can guide us to prosperity.

Thank you for making 2025 unforgettable. Come On Let’s Go! into 2026 with renewed determination.
