Quebec Sovereignty Works: What Alberta Can Learn from the Bloc Quebecois Playbook

by Alberta Prosperity Project

Quebec’s Strategy and Alberta’s Path Forward

Rick Bell’s article, Trudeau Cozy with Money-Grubbing Bloc Quebecois, highlights Quebec’s success in leveraging separatism to advance its agenda. While Bell criticizes Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s alliance with the Bloc Quebecois, Alberta should view Quebec’s political maneuvers as a blueprint for securing its own future. Through unwavering advocacy for Quebec’s interests, separatists like the Bloc have repeatedly influenced federal policy. Alberta, facing economic exploitation by Ottawa, can learn from this model and demand a referendum on sovereignty. Quebec sovereignty in on the rise. Now its Alberta’s turn!

How Quebec Sovereignty Advances Its Interests

The Bloc Quebecois has mastered the art of playing the political game while pushing its separatist agenda. By continuously advocating for Quebec’s sovereignty, the Bloc has successfully pressured successive federal governments into granting the province significant concessions. In this latest instance, as Bell discusses, Trudeau’s government is bending to Bloc demands in exchange for political support. This dynamic has allowed Quebec to extract greater financial benefits from Ottawa, including significant federal transfer payments—often at the expense of provinces like Alberta.

Quebec Has a Better Deal inside Canada. Why not Alberta?

Alberta is one of Canada’s most economically robust provinces, yet it frequently bears the brunt of policies that drain its wealth. From energy policies to federal transfer payments, Alberta finds itself subsidizing other provinces—most notably Quebec, which continues to receive substantial federal support while opposing Alberta’s key industries, such as oil and gas. This exploitation has led many Albertans to question whether remaining within Canada is in the province’s best interest. The Alberta Prosperity Project argues that a referendum on sovereignty, akin to what Quebec has pursued, could be Alberta’s best option for reclaiming control over its resources and political future.

Why a Referendum on Alberta Sovereignty is Necessary

A referendum would enable Albertans to decide whether they want greater autonomy within Canada or to pursue full independence. Alberta, with its economic strength and political will, is well-positioned to demand a better deal from Ottawa or, if necessary, leave Confederation entirely. Quebec’s long history of separatist advocacy has proven that such a stance can yield significant gains, even without outright independence. By following a similar path, Alberta can assert its right to govern itself, protect its industries, and secure its prosperity.

Trudeau’s Alliance with the Bloc: A Cautionary Tale

As Bell points out, Trudeau’s current alignment with the Bloc Quebecois is a desperate attempt to cling to power. But for Albertans, it should serve as a reminder that Ottawa will cater to the loudest and most persistent voices. Quebec’s Bloc has learned how to make federal politics work for them, even as they push for sovereignty. Alberta should adopt the same approach, using the political tools at its disposal—including a referendum—to ensure its interests are represented.

Time for Alberta to Seize Its Future

Quebec separatists like the Bloc Quebecois have shown that consistent advocacy for sovereignty can yield substantial benefits. Alberta, with its rich resources and economic power, can do the same by advocating for a referendum on sovereignty. Whether the goal is greater autonomy or outright independence, Alberta must follow Quebec’s lead and take control of its future—ensuring freedom, prosperity, and self-determination for generations to come.
