December 22, 2025 – Today is a day that will be remembered in Alberta’s history. The Alberta Prosperity Project (APP) has received official confirmation from Elections Alberta that our Citizen Initiative Petition application (2025-CIP-10) – A Referendum Relating to Alberta Independence – has fully satisfied all requirements under the Citizen Initiative Act.
In a letter dated December 22, 2025, Chief Electoral Officer Gordon McClure confirmed that the mandatory 7-day public notice period begins today, December 22, 2025, and runs through December 29, 2025. During this period, Elections Alberta will publish the official Notice of Initiative Petition approval, the full application, and the constitutional question on their website.
With December 29 falling on a day the office is closed under the Interpretation Act, section 22, the petition will be formally issued on the next business day: Friday, January 2, 2026.
This approval clears the path for Albertans to collect signatures and potentially trigger the province’s first-ever binding referendum on independence.

What Comes Next?
- December 23–29, 2025: Public notice period on the Elections Alberta website.
- January 2, 2026: Petition officially issued – signature collection can begin across Alberta!
- 120-day collection period: We must gather approximately 177,000 valid signatures (10% of eligible voters from the last provincial election).
Success means a referendum will be called, giving every Albertan a direct democratic voice on our future.
